AH-16 Aegyptus Prima
The numbered province belonged to a stage later than the first separation of Aegyptus from other Egyptian jurisdictions. Alexandria’s grain shipping, customs, urban institutions, church leadership, and political influence connected its government to interests far beyond one provincial territory.
Sixth-century reform reunited substantial civil and military authority in leading Egyptian offices, responding to problems of revenue, order, and administrative coordination. The precise operation of the hierarchy changed over time. Prima must therefore be distinguished from both the whole early imperial province and the larger Egyptian diocesan framework.
