Provinces · Earlier divisions, temporary arrangements, and the final ancient reorganizations
AH-17 Aegyptus Secunda
Its existence reflects the pressure to divide responsibilities within a densely cultivated and institutionally complex region. Villages, towns, waterways, estates, tax obligations, and local officials supported government. Association with higher Alexandrian authority did not make the province simply a neighbourhood of the city.
The reconstruction of exact limits and centres depends on administrative phase. A responsible history should retain the province without assigning a permanently fixed outline from every use of the name. Persian occupation and Arab conquest ultimately replaced its earlier sovereign and fiscal framework.
