Provinces · Earlier divisions, temporary arrangements, and the final ancient reorganizations
AH-10 The short-lived Hispania Nova Citerior Antoniniana
The name represents an intermediate attempt to differentiate northern Hispanic administration. Its relationship to the later province of Gallaecia cannot be settled by assuming that one was simply renamed as the other. Provincial reforms could be temporary, partially implemented, or later replaced by different territorial arrangements.
The northwestern and northern districts contained important roads, military installations, mining histories, towns, and local communities. Bringing officials closer to such a region had practical administrative logic. The province nevertheless requires treatment as a limited experiment within the changing Hispanic system, distinct from the more durable late subdivisions that followed.
