Provinces · The later western provinces
LW-48 Pannonia Secunda

Sirmium’s court, administrative, military, and religious functions gave this province exceptional importance. The Sava corridor and routes between Italy and the East supported movement and supply. Productive hinterlands and urban demand tied provincial society to imperial operations.
Civil war and external pressure repeatedly affected the region. Hunnic power, later competing rulers, and Eastern Roman efforts altered control across the fifth and sixth centuries. Sirmium’s fate was not identical to that of every rural district. The province’s history therefore requires distinguishing a major imperial city, its civil jurisdiction, and the wider military corridor in which it stood.
