AH-26 Numidia Cirtensis and Numidia Militiana
The northern Cirtan and military-associated designations expressed an attempt to differentiate administrative responsibilities within a region whose urban, agricultural, and army histories were closely connected. Cirta’s established civic prominence and the military landscape around the legionary command supplied different institutional centres.
The division did not produce two entirely separate societies. Roads, markets, recruits, estates, officials, and religious communities continued to connect the territories. Reunification replaced the brief arrangement, while the province’s broader African identity remained. These names are important precisely because a later unified Numidia can conceal temporary experiments in government.
