The later Balkan provincial landscape. Dacia south of the Danube, the two Epiri, Thessaly, Macedonia, Achaia, and the Thracian districts illustrate the replacement of large commands by smaller jurisdictions. The river network helps relate frontier districts to the Adriatic, Aegean, and imperial straits.

The province’s administrative history includes division, reassignment, and territorial relationships with neighbouring jurisdictions. Its names indicate an attempt to distinguish northern responsibilities from the Thessalonican core. Stobi’s urban, road, and later Christian importance provides a substantial regional setting, but not a complete reconstruction of every boundary.

The survival of different stages of the arrangement makes one synchronized outline unreliable. The province should nevertheless receive its own identity rather than being omitted from northern Macedonian history. Its communities participated in farming, transport, civic life, and Christian institutions within a Balkan landscape repeatedly affected by military movement and later settlement change.
