Provinces · Earlier divisions, temporary arrangements, and the final ancient reorganizations
AH-19 Augustamnica Secunda
This province’s history rested on cultivated land, canals, settlements, local legal relationships, and the officials responsible for revenue and order. Its territory had already experienced several earlier changes of provincial affiliation. The numbered title therefore describes an administrative phase rather than a timeless natural region.
Christian communities, monasteries, landowners, and fiscal officials formed overlapping institutions. Sixth-century reforms altered higher authority, while the region’s productive communities remained essential to the state. Conquest changed sovereignty, but not every field boundary, irrigation obligation, or household relationship at once.
