The empire around 400 CE. The broad colours represent prefectural groupings, while regional names, major cities, and symbols for selected state industries show the larger administrative and logistical setting. These groupings contained many individual provinces; a region labelled on this map is not necessarily one province.

Late placement within the Italian administrative sphere reflected the corridor’s relationship to the peninsula. Pass security, transport, local supplies, and valley communities remained central concerns. The province’s small size did not reduce its significance for armies and officials moving between Italy and Gaul.

Christian institutions developed along the same routes. Successor powers inherited a landscape whose strategic logic was persistent even when its government changed. The late province must be distinguished both from the earlier client kingdom and from neighbouring Alpine jurisdictions assigned to Gaul.
